The official window
You can usually apply for a Schengen short-stay visa up to 6 months before your trip, and you should apply at least 15 days before. Standard processing is about 15 days, but it can take longer in busy months.
Why waiting is risky
- Appointment slots at visa centres fill up quickly from spring onwards
- Processing can slow down when embassies receive more applications
- If something is missing, you need time to fix it and still travel on time
- Flight prices rise when you book late after the visa arrives
A simple plan for a June–July trip
- January–February: decide your countries and dates; check your passport validity.
- February–March: collect documents — bank statements, ITR, leave letter.
- March–April: book refundable hotels and flight reservations, then apply.
- May: receive your visa and confirm your bookings.
Tip: Book refundable hotels and flight reservations for your application, and pay for the final tickets only after your visa arrives.
